Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
Centre Georges Pompidou, originally uploaded by latinka311. This is one of my favorite places in Paris. Centre Georges Pompidou is something that makes you stop, stare and admire when passing by because it isn’t something you would expect when walking down the Paris boulevards and alleys. There are people who consider it ugly, but you have to admit this is something quite different. And for modern art museum – just perfect. I’ve never seen anything like it. First of all, the building was built inside out, so all pipes are outside the building. They are vividly coloured: bright green for water, yellow for electricity and blue for air-conditioning.
The centre opened in 1977 and is situated in 4th arrondissement of Paris near Les Halles and Marais. It houses the Modern Art Museum (Musée National d’Art Moderne), cinema, library, shops and performance space. There are many little shops and cafés around the Centre, as well as colorful Stravinsky fountain which was inspired by Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird and designed by Niki de Saint-Phalle and Jean Tinguely. One of the buildings most popular features is the external escalator with beautiful views of Paris. Centre Pompidou is really something different and worth seeing when visiting the city.
